Montañas Vacias P&P Challenge: Cycling Around Penyagolosa, the “Magic Mountain”

Our route is a fresh take on the well-known Montañas Vacías trail, designed to showcase the rugged beauty of Castellón. Starting in the charming village of Barracas, this journey takes you on a loop around Penyagolosa, the tallest mountain in the region and a symbol of local heritage.

Penyagolosa, often called the “Magic Mountain,” reaches 1,813 metres and is steeped in legend. For centuries, it’s been a place of pilgrimage and storytelling, standing as a link between the earth and the heavens. Cycling around it gives you a sense of its majesty, with every twist and turn revealing something new—dense forests, sweeping plains, and quiet villages where time seems to stand still.

The trail is a mix of gravel paths and rugged tracks, weaving through landscapes that feel untouched. It’s challenging but rewarding, with breathtaking views and a sense of calm you won’t find on busier routes. You’ll finish in Montanejos, famous for its natural hot springs—a well-deserved treat after days on the bike.

Whether you’re drawn by the thrill of remote cycling or simply want to immerse yourself in the wild beauty of Spain, this is more than just a ride. It’s a chance to connect with nature, push yourself, and discover a side of the region few get to see.

Off the bike, we will enjoy tapas, coffee, cosy accommodation, and warm hospitality from our hosts who have endless stories to share. We will end each day with tired legs, but beautiful views and plenty of opportunities to unwind and connect with the vibrant culture of the traditional towns that can only be found in this unique area.
